Our main floor bathroom is a work in progress right now. Partially because I can’t decide on the lighting I want, but mostly because we have a 3-month old baby who keeps us pretty busy. Before he was born, we were in a mad dash to get as much as possible done on our fixer-upper…but now that he’s here, renovations have slowed down substantially.
Shortly after we moved in, we took down the sliding shower door. Then, we painted the room a dark navy blue and took down the dated medicine cabinet.
We still need to touch the paint up, but I wanted to share our progress on the bathroom so far.
Here’s what the room looked like before (after we took down the previous owner’s border – yikes). Also, please excuse the quality of these photos…we took them in a rush, because, well..who wants to stare at this room for an extended period of time? Not me.
Remember when we took down our shower door? You may notice that we still haven’t managed to yank the anchors out of the wall. In due time.
And here is what the bathroom looked like mid-painting, with that terrible medicine cabinet:
And this is what we’ve been living with for the past two weeks: no mirror! It looks like we could throw up a projector and watch movies in there, huh? ;)
We lost some storage when we took down that medicine cabinet, but to me it was well worth it.
I bought a framed mirror, and it has been sitting on the floor for the entire two weeks because I can’t decide what kind of lighting I want. Lighting above the mirror would be the easiest choice, since that’s the way the bathroom is already wired. If we went with that, I’d put the mirror up horizontally (just like the old mirror). If we go with sconces on either side though, we’ll do the mirror vertically and have to rewire the lighting.
I’m leaning toward putting the mirror up vertically and rewiring the lighting. I don’t know why I can’t just make things easy on us – ha ha.
What are your thoughts?
Also, take a look at the grout in this tile. Scary huh? Replacing the tile altogether will probably be the next project on our list for the bathroom.

Maybe since the sink and counter are so wide hanging the mirror horizontally would look more symmetrical? You should post pictures of what it’d look like by propping it up in each direction! From a lighting standpoint, either way you should have good light for makeup/hair (#priorities) since there will be even light all over!
